The Military History Society of Ireland was founded in 1949. The aim of the Society is to promote the study of military history, and in particular the history of warfare in Ireland and of Irish people in war. The flagship of the Society, The Irish Sword, is a twice yearly publication, renowned for its scholarly treatment of military history.
The Society is affiliated, under the style of the Irish Commission for Military History, to the International Commission of Military History (www.icmh.info)

75th Anniversary of the Military History Society of Ireland
In 2024, the Society celebrated its 75th Anniversary. The occasion was marked, inter alia, by a keynote lecture given on 22nd March 2024 by Past-President, Dr Harman Murtagh, on the history of the Society since its inception. This lecture will be recast and published in a future issue of the Irish Sword. A short summary, 75 Years of Military History, is available by clicking the link below.
